Most times, kids wants to express their being or make their presence felt by talking with you. They see you daily talking with either their mum, a visitor, big brother or someone on the phone. They yearn to belong, they want to do what they see you do, they want to communicate and connect but the little unpleasant thing you have to keep up with as a parent is that what they say to youand expect just about a serious reply utterly makes no sense or eludes your answer bank, just like a kid asking you, " why is the sky blue", "why does fishes swim", "why does the television talk". To them, what they are saying or asking you makes a lot of sense and therefore you as a parent/guardian should respect their little world and horizon, condescend to their level and present a satisfying answer to them.

Shutting child up when he asks those 'irrelevant' questions or brings those 'irrelevant' topics up makes them feel that what they are saying is truly 'irrelevant' and 'useless' and they could carry that low self-esteem right into adulthood by withholding every of their opinion when sought for because of fear of it being tagged a stupid idea or an irrelevant opinion.

When child comes to you and starts a conversation or interrogative session and you are too busy at the moment, don't just discard them, tell them gently that you are busy at the moment and promise to call them up when you are done with whatever you are doing - never break this promise, always fulfill the promise you make to that child because it not only increases their trust in you but also prepares them for the larger world where 'being a person who stands by his/her words' matters a lot. When you are talking with your child, listen to them with your eyes for their facial expression says about 90% of what they want to say to you. This is because they are still young and basically their 'word bank' is stuffed with just a few words and when they want to say something which the words to express it isn't in their 'word bank' they use the face to convey the message to you and If you are not watching them, they feel disappointed you have lost a detail of their story and because you've lost a clip of the story; you would give them a reply with just the half-part of the story you got using your ears leaving the ones you should have gotten using your eyes.

Also, they could be concealing things out of fear, they could tell you verbally "am fine " but their face tells you "nothing is fine at all" and with a little gentle pressure you could get them to say what they have being threatened by someone never to say.

Those kids can hide things from you verbally but can never hide anything no matter how dark it is from showing on their faces. Your attention, love and patience as they grow into reasoning just like you is all they ask for; give it to them!
