ISLAMABAD: Universal Children Day is being observed across the globe including Pakistan on November 20 (today) with a call for ensuring the rights of children.

Various public and private organisations have arranged seminars, conferences, rallies, walks and interactive programmes to show the plight of those children who are deprived of basic amenities of life.

Child Rights Movement (CRM), which is a coalition of international and national non-governmental organisations, will arrange a function to celebrate Universal Children Day on Sunday (today).

UNICEF will mark Universal Children's Day today, highlighting its demand for ensuring registration of all births across Pakistan so that children rights are protected.

The day will be marked with the theme "Make Every Child Count", conveying the message that birth registration is the first right of every child born in Pakistan.

On December 14, 1954, the UN General Assembly recommended that all countries should introduce an annual event from 1956 known, as Universal Children's Day to encourage fraternity and understanding between children all over the world and promoting the welfare of children.

It was recommended that individual countries should choose an appropriate date for this occasion.

At the time, the UN General Assembly recommended that all countries should establish a Children's Day on an "appropriate" date.

Many of the countries respected this recommendation and the Universal Children's Day has since been annually observed on November 20.
