Everyone has them. Whether its attributed to a bad day, not enough practice, or a general lack of enthusiasm to improve, almost everyone has some aspect to them that can be considered poor communication skills. Our very existence is built upon how we interact with others and our very social societies can be extremely demanding at times. Having well-rounded communication skills will not only help one succeed in their goals but to overall happier and care free in their everyday life. Recognizing and striving towards good communication skills is a great thing, but an even more effective method is to observe the poor ones and then correct them as you see fit. Its not the lack of good communication skills that cause tense situations; its the presence of poor ones.
Communication is a complex and hard to grasp concept, even those who study it for a living suffer from the common vices of poor communication skills. The ability to recognize them in yourself and correct them throughout your daily life is the key to success however. The first sign that the lines of communication have been crossed or broken down is stress or confusion. If people are getting upset its most likely due to either a misunderstanding or poor handling of a situation from a communications standpoint. Once this red flag has occurred, sit down and rethink what was said and how all parties might have interpreted it. Things that seem simple to understand to you can easily be taken a different way by another. Its this inability to empathize that truly plagues the average person communication skills.

Being able to empathize with another person and try to view all communications from both sides is the first step to improving your communication skills and with the ability to recognize when poor communication skills have been exhibited, then you have all the tools to tackle the rest of the situation. Recognizing ambiguity and better clarifying what you meant drastically cuts down on confusion which is one of the biggest reasons for frustration, stress and an overall lack of motivation to communicate and resolve problems. While youre in the process of better clarifying what you mean, also try to give feedback. Communication is far too one directional in the average persons life. Communication is all about giving feedback and letting the other person know how you feel and how what they are saying is affecting you. Without truly communicating one can never improve their communication skills and without those skills the daily activities and relationships which one harbors become far more stressful than they really have to be.
Poor communication skills are the key to success, to better clarify, recognizing and eliminating poor communication skills is the key to success. For such a social civilization we really do not stress good communication skills and those who have them are often times brought down by those who dont. The entire process of communicating is an effort both parties must make. One-sided dedication is about as effective as one sided communication. Recognize your faults, correct them, and enjoy the newfound happiness it will bring you.
