Bangladesh's main opposition leader is leading thousands of supporters on a cross-country march to demand that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's government resign and call new elections.

Khaleda Zia set off Monday from her office in the capital Dhaka to Sylhet city, 120 miles (192 kilometers) away.

Zia's four-party opposition alliance has accused her Hasina's 2-year-old government of failing to control inflation and keep law and order.

Zia's spokesman Fakhrul Islam said more than 15,000 supporters have joined the march on board 3,000 jeeps and microbuses. Riot police are monitoring the march, but no violence has been reported.

Bangladesh's next general election is not due until 2014.
