It has been reported that an unidentified man walked along the famous Vine Street near Sunset Boulevard, firing shots into the air and at passing cars.
People ran for cover as the man shouted he was prepared to die.
Calling for the police to kill him, the gunman eventually exhausted his ammunition before pulling a knife.
Policeman called on the man to surrender before shooting him.
One driver was injured before the attacker was killed.
A 40-year-old man was wounded in the upper body and taken to a local hospital.
