IBA ranked best private varsity in province


KARACHI: The Sindh Charter Inspection and Evaluation Committee has ranked the Institute of Business Administration (IBA) as the best private higher education institute of the province in its latest grading list based upon education and the administrative quality of universities.

In the grading list that has been compiled on the evaluation of universities during the years 2006 to 2008, 22 universities and higher education institutes of the province were given ranking. Out of all the universities, nine universities were awarded a five-star rating, 12 universities were given a four-star ranking and only one university has been advised to improve its performance.

The charter committee has the authority to award charters to private universities besides overseeing their performance. The charter committee members comprise of its chairman Dr SM Qureshi, Sindh University VC Mazharul Siddiqi, Univeristy of Karachi VC Pirzada Qasim Raza Siddiqi, Sindh Agriculture University VC Bashir Ahmed Sheikh, Sindh Education Secretary Rizwan Memon and HEC Regional Director SM Iqbal.

According to the ranking, IBA tops the list with 74 marks, followed by Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science and Technology (SZABIST) with 73 marks, Iqra University with 72 marks and the Indus Valley School of Arts and Architecture with 71 marks.

The other universities who were given a five-star ranking include the Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology (SSUET), Textile Institute of Pakistan, Hamdard University, Muhammad Ali Jinnah University (MAJU) and the Ziauddin University.

The universities that were awarded a four-star ranking include the Khadim Ali Shah Bukhari Institute of Technology, Fatima Jinnah Women University, Dadabhoy Institute of Higher Studies, Indus Institute of Higher Studies, Newports Institute of Communication and Economics, Greenwich University, Baqai Medical University, Karachi Institute of Economics and Technology, Preston Institute of Science and Technology, Isra University Hyderabad, and the Institute of Business Management.

However, the University of East in Hyderabad failed to get a place in the ranking list. The charter inspection and evaluation committee advised the university to upgrade its academic and administrative standards.

The committee also evaluated the overall performance of the universities and declared that three universities have sustained their growth since their inception while 18 universities have improved their standards in terms of education and facilities. Among the universities who sustained their growth are Isra University, Fatima Jinnah Women University and the Greenwich University.
