PTEA demands freeze of power rates for six months

From Our Correspondent

FAISALABAD: Pakistan Textile Exporters Association (PTEA) chairman Rana Arif Tauseef has demanded freeze of the electricity prices for six months and abolition of the fuel adjustment surcharge, saying that the frequent increase in prices and surcharges is hitting all sectors of economy, disrupting the economic cycle and jacking up inflation in the country.

He was addressing a meeting here on Monday. Federal Minister for Water and Power Syed Naveed Qamar was also present. Rana Arif Tauseef said that the government must shelve the decision to increase electricity prices for six months as it was a minimum period to complete an export transaction. “The industrial sector is already facing internal and external challenges and a constant increase in electricity prices is aggravating the economic crisis. Owing to high business cost in Pakistan, a large number of industrial units had already shifted to other countries. High power tariffs, a burden on businesses and industry, can be reduced by utilising the available water resources more efficiently as the water is the most viable and cheapest way to produce electricity,” he suggested.

He demanded that the fuel adjustment formula should be revamped as it was very seriously affecting the trade and industry in a negative way as well as general masses. “Pakistani exports are losing buyers in the international market because of high business cost and the decision to increase power tariff under the monthly fuel adjustment system will make the Pakistani goods more uncompetitive,” he maintained. He also demanded a cut in the EQ surcharge to 2 per cent as levied in other provinces and to charge MDI charges on actual basis and not for loadshedding hours.

The PTEA chairman said that the government had not taken serious steps to overcome the growing electricity shortfall, resulting in a slowdown of economic activity across the country. The electricity supply cuts have a negative impact on the production process as well and export of value added industries in Punjab. He requested the government to take possible steps for consistent supply of electricity to industries. He asked the government to devise a proper mechanism instead of adopting shortcut solutions to meet the electricity demands.
