Whoever you believe, it's still worth checking out the technology on YouTube and looking out for the Surface ain businesses throughout 2010. 4/Web TV takes over Causing a splash in 2009, it's 2010 that will really see the explosion of web TV, with web apps coming straight to your plasma. The first of its kind was the Samsung Widget TV which teamed with Yahoo! Connected TV to provide live news and weather feeds. Now Yahoo! has launched a developers kit help to achieve its aim of having 1000 widgets available by the end of 2010. "We're combining the best of TV with the best of the internet." says Yahoo big wig Russ Shafer. Users will be able to tweet about the football game, follow live stats and even go shopping for your team's shirt as it happens. Sony, LG and Philips widget TVs are scheduled for 2010. 1/3D TV for the masses We haven't been given an exact release date yet, but we know that 2010 will see the release of the long-awaited 3D Sky channel, which, according to Sky, is expected to include 'movies, entertainment and sport'. To watch it you'll need a 3D Ready TV, which will go on sale in 2010 (more on this later). Sky has also confirmed the launch of a new 'pull' video-on-demand (VOD) service for 2010. This will complement Sky+ and current Sky Anytime service and use the broadband capability of existing Sky+HD boxes. Standing at 27cm tall with a resolution of 96 x 128 with 24-bit colour, Sony has hinted at applying the tech towards 3D advertisements, exhibition events, web shopping, art appreciation, virtual pets and 3D photo frames. Semi processor - a company Apple bought into back in 2008. Price? Well, that's said to be between $799 and $999 ( 481 and 601). If it releases an app store for global newspapers, print could finally be kicking the bucket. 2/Flexible paper We've seen demos of bendable electronic paper from the like of LG and E-Ink, but AUO is the first company to promise mass production of the product for 2010, with Dr. C.T. Liu, Senior VP & GM of Consumer Product Display Business Group of AUO stating: "The mass production of the flexible e-paper will drive the next wave of the reading revolution". AUO has demoed a 6-inch flexible display offering 16 shades of gray and contrast ratio of 9:1 (beating the Kindle's 7:1). 3/Kindle takes over? It seems with the slew of eBooks coming at us Amazon has stepped up its bid for domination by confirming that a Kindle application for the PC is coming soon and a company spokesman has also stated that a Mac version is being worked on. With Amazon currently selling 48 eBooks for every 100 physical books and deals to deliver newsapaper subscriptions from 85 papers worldwide, it seems that the Kindle is on the verge of doing for literature what the iPod did for music. Amazon has also reported a recent net profit of $199m, up 62% on the same period a year earlier, and attribute it to sales of the Kindle - its best-selling product. 4/Android eBook challenges Kindle Trying to get one over on the Kindle with its Android OS is the 2GB Nook from US internet book behemoths Barnes & Noble. The Nook has two screens - one for browsing, one for reading, its built for web browsing and running Android apps and a book-lending facility which gives lenders two weeks to finish a novel. Available only in the US at the minute ($157), we expect a version to hit the UK by Q2 of 2010. 5/Google Editions Store 2010 will see the launch of the new Google Editions store, which will offer somewhere between 400,000 and 600,000 books (more than that offered by Sony and Kindle combined), with prices set by publishers and Google collecting 55% of profits. Available to any device with a web browser, the books will also be available offline after they've been accessed for the first time. 4/Integration Rivalling social networking sites Facebook and Twitter won't ever join hands, so third party programs are needed to bridge the gap and integrate them on one platform. TweetDeck is a major player in the merging game and provides a platform for organising friends and live updates from Twitter, Facebook and Myspace. According to founder Ian Dodsworth, the software is "the number one Twitter service outside of Twitter.com. " 2010 will see this as an emerging trend - especially in mobiles - where there'll be less emphasis on a myriad new networking sites and more on applications to let you merge the most popular ones seamlessly. Motorola's newly unveiled Motoblur software and 3's INQ phones currently lead the way with mobile integration, but when we hit 2010 there will be similar platforms from every mobile manufacturer. 1/Download-only Now that every major handheld platform (PSP Go, DSi and iPhone/iTouch) is a fully-fledged web machine, Nintendo's handheld is the last to still use physical media for games. Whilst Apple's uber-device has always fed solely from its App store, Sony only recently dropped UMDs, eschewing the slot in the new PSP Go for downloadable games stored in the consoles memory. A recent survey by TNS revealed that downloaded games will outsell traditional retail sales within three years. 4/Living room sync In the case of Nintendo and Sony, the idea of having devices in your pocket sync with the ones in your living room is mighty appealing, and is something that's continuingly being strived for. 2010 should see Sony further capitalise on its Remote Play link between PSP and PS3, which allows content streaming from console to handheld over a secure connection. Tantalisingly, Sony's John Koller says that the tech to stream a Blu-ray from PS3 to PSP "actually exists today." Likewise, the DSi links up with The Nintendo Wii to eek more content and life from games in its biggest franchises, such as Pokemon. 5/iPhone gaming gets big Apple's not too strict with approving games and developers get 70 per cent of the profits - from a price they set themselves. The iPhone's no slouch in the graphics department, either, often pushing out DSi-challenging visuals. EA's first FIFA iPhone game landed in October 09, and suggests that the big developers are beginning to see the machine as a genuine contender in its own right. Look out for bigger and more complex games over the coming year. 3/Improved memory for multiple apps Palm's WebOS showed us that it is possible to run multiple apps at once. Want to listen to music, write on twitter, check emails and find out where the hell you are all at the same time without closing anything down? In 2010 that'll be the norm. Improved processors are the meat of the multitasking sandwich and smartphones sporting more RAM for running Apps will "drive a massive change in the role of the smartphone and have a more profound impact on how we live our lives day-to-day than any consumer electronics device in history," according to Motorola.
